Anyone who was told a coating would stop rock chips from the H-1 or a cinder road.
Short answer
Ceramic helps against UV, bird droppings, sap, and wash scratches. It does not stop rocks. PPF (clear bra) takes the impact on bumper, hood edge, mirrors, and sills.
You can coat over quality film. You cannot ask a coating to do a film’s job.
What is happening to the car
Island highways throw pebbles. Windward roads throw sand. Driveways throw red grit. Those are impact events measured in thickness ceramic does not have.
Meanwhile the same car is baked, salted, and mineral-spotted. That is chemistry. Film alone still needs washing and often likes a coating on top so dirt releases.
Cheap film yellows in this sun and lifts at edges in humidity. That is a product and install problem, not an argument against film as a category.
What a detailer can do
A good island spec: PPF on impact zones, ceramic on the rest of the paint and on the film if the film maker allows it.
Prep still matters. Film over dirty or poorly corrected paint looks worse than bare paint. Coating over swirls freezes the swirls in place.
Edge care: no pressure-washer assault on film seams. Coastal cars need the front end inspected for lift after a year of heat and salt.
What is no longer detailing
Deep dents, cracked bumper covers, and yellowed old film that will not release cleanly are body or film-specialist jobs.
A coating sold as “chip warranty” is a sales line. Walk.
