Who this is for
This is for coastal parkers in Kailua, Waimānalo, Waikīkī, Lahaina, Kihei, and Kailua-Kona who were promised multi-year hydrophobic behavior and watched water stop sheeting within a year.
It is also for buyers comparing quotes who need to know which shortcuts show up later as “the coating failed.”
Short answer
Most first-year failures are not the bottle. They are oil left on the paint, coating flashed on a hot hood, salt never washed off, or a consumer wax piled on top of a fresh layer.
A coastal car can still wear a professional coating well. It cannot survive being installed like a mainland garage-kept hatchback and then ignored in trade-wind salt.
What is happening to the car
Dirty paint under the coating. Silicone dressings, old wax, and leftover polish oils block the silane bond. The layer sits on contamination instead of clear coat, then lets go in sheets or high spots.
Salt film. Ocean aerosol does not wait for a beach day. It bonds to the new surface, holds moisture, and turns every missed wash into a mineral etch test.
Hot-panel install. A dark hood in Honolulu at 11 a.m. can be far above the product’s application window. The coating flashes, streaks, and never levels.
Wrong aftercare. Automatic brush tunnels, dry wiping red dirt, and oily soaps chew a thin film faster than the warranty card admits.
What a detailer can do
A careful shop will inspect whether anything is still bonded, strip or polish what failed, decontaminate, correct if thickness allows, and reinstall in shade on a cool panel.
They should also give a coastal wash plan: coating-safe soap, no dry dusting, a booster on the maker’s schedule, and an undercarriage rinse that the coating never replaces.
Ask how they verify prep — iron remover, clay, panel wipe — and whether they will look at the car in six months. A shop that disappears after install is selling a bottle, not a system.
What is no longer detailing
If the clear coat is already chalking through, recoating locks in dullness. That paint needs evaluation for correction or respray first.
Rust bubbling at edges, film lifting, or a coating stacked three brands deep is a reset, not another topper. Deep clear-coat failure is body work.
