Short answer
UV breaks the binders in clear coat. The surface chalks, loses gloss, then thins. Color under a failed clear coat fades and can start to look cloudy or blotchy.
Shade, film on the glass, and a maintained sacrificial layer (sealant or ceramic) slow the curve. Nothing stops it if the car lives in a Kapolei or Kihei parking lot with no cover.
What is happening to the car
Photodegradation. Ultraviolet energy breaks polymer chains in the clear. Plasticizers leave interior vinyl the same way; outside, you see powder and haze.
Heat-soak multiplies it. A black hood stores heat. Chemical attacks from bird droppings, sap, and minerals happen faster on a hot panel.
Uneven wear. Horizontal panels — hood, roof, trunk — fail first. Vertical doors last longer. That two-tone “roof is older than the fender” look is UV math, not a bad respray by itself.
Soft tops and trim. Fabric coatings and unpainted plastic take the same beating. Gray cladding is the trim version of chalked clear coat.
What a detailer can do
A detailer can measure remaining clear coat, correct light oxidation if thickness allows, and install UV-stable protection. They can restore faded trim and condition convertible tops.
Honest shops will say when the clear is too far gone to polish. Polishing removes clear. On a thin, cooked hood, “make it glossy” can mean “make it through.”
What is no longer detailing
Clear coat peeling in sheets, primer showing, or color mismatch after a cheap respray is body work.
Cracked dashboards and split leather are interior repair or replacement. Dressing will not rebuild plasticizer that UV already cooked out.
